Golden Gate Military Cemetery

"I believe much of the world's sorrow comes from people who know they are this -- yet let themselves be treated as that."

This is a brief scene of Harold and Maude sitting in a cemetery. The camera pans out and out and out, revealing a seemingly endless sea of identical and perfectly-aligned gravestones.

It was filmed at the Golden Gate Military Cemetery, on Sneath Lane in San Bruno. The red circle in the 1971 photo shows Harold and Maude, toward the end of the long zoom-out. We weren't able to identify the location within the cemetery, and the 2013 picture is taken about halfway along Sneath Lane. But after further research, I think that they were further north and east of my location. I will return here at some point and do more painstaking research.

Fun fact: Notable interments at this cemetery range from Admiral Chester Nimitz, the navy's last five-star admiral, to Dan White, the San Francisco Supervisor who assassinated Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.
