Discussion with Uncle Victor, Part 1

"This country has been too harsh in its outright condemnation of war."

This is a series of scenes following a pronouncement by Harold's mother that she has instructed his Uncle Victor to induct Harold into the army. Harold drives in the back of his Uncle's chauffeured car, then walks with him and listens to his war stories, with Harold pretending to get more and more excited about the prospect of becoming a bloodthirsty killer.

The early part of this sequence was filmed around Sutro Heights Park, the site of the former estate of SF mayor Adolph Sutro. The later part of the sequence was filmed among the ruins of the Sutro Baths, the huge public bathhouses that Sutro built in the 1890s, which closed and burned down in 1966. (Even if you have no interest in "Harold and Maude", a visit to these ruins is an amazing trip.) As you might expect, the ruins have deteriorated quite a bit from 1971 to 2013.

Here are Harold and Uncle Victor walking through Sutro Heights Park, as Uncle Victor says "Let's get the Jerries back on the other side where they belong." Unlike everything else in these Sutro locations, this gazebo in the park is actually in better shape today than it was in 1971; it must have undergone a renovation at some point.

In the next scene, they continue to walk as Uncle Victor complains that he's "not well liked in Washington." This was filmed on the southern side of the Sutro Bath ruins, very close to the Cliff House. This was the toughest one ... I had no idea where in the vast ruin it was filmed ... but it was the concrete wall behind them, with the chipped upper-right corner, that showed the way. The large light-colored stone block, to the right of Harold, appears to be gone now. This scene was filmed from the other side of the ruins, hundreds of yards away (very close to where the next part of the scene takes place):

Fun fact: Adolph Sutro was the first Jewish mayor of San Francisco.
