Discussion with Uncle Victor, Part 2

"I am petitioning for peace."

As this sequence continues, on ruins above the Pacific, they run into Maude, posing as a peace protestor. Harold calls her a "commie" and a "parasite" and chases her, until she falls through a hole in the ruins and apparently dies, shocking Uncle Victor and getting Harold out of the army.

This part of the sequence was filmed on the northern side of the Sutro Bath ruins. If you descend the stairs from the main parking lot, fork off to the right on the trail that runs approximately level, instead of continuing to descend toward the ruins and the ocean. This was actually the scene that is responsible for getting me into The Project; I was researching the Sutro Bath ruins in preparation for a work outing to the site, and discovered that it was where this scene was filmed. While everyone else was down below exploring the ruins, I was above looking for where Maude held her "Peace" sign.

In the next part of the scene, Uncle Victor relates how he lost his arm. The paving stones you can see at Uncle Victor's feet are gone, but the smooth rock and dark (almost blue) crevice next to him were easy to identify:

Finally, they encounter Maude, in her guise as a peace protestor. The exact spot where Maude is standing, "Peace" sign in hand, was easy to identify thanks to the pieces of thick metal embedded in the plaza surface. Here is Gordon standing at exactly the same spot. By the way, when we were here, it was gale-force winds. Had the winds been anything like that on the day they filmed this scene, the "Peace" sign would surely have been ripped right out of Maude's hands!

Finally, Maude flees down a flight of stairs and Harold charges after her, wielding Maude's "Peace" sign like a weapon. These stairs are quite decayed now and are fenced off. The hole that Maude falls through and "dies" is underneath a section of concrete block wall that has collapsed onto that spot since 1971:

Fun fact: The Sutro Baths contained 7 different glass-enclosed swimming pools -- one freshwater and 6 saltwater. At the time, it was the largest public swimming facility in the world.
